Meet our new team member: John Souter

Having been a family run business for over 25 years, we decided it was time to expand our team and welcome two experienced sales designers. With a wealth of knowledge and skill to share, we caught up with our newbies to get to know them a little better in our latest meet the team blog series - first up is John…

After working in various job roles over the years, John became involved in bathroom design whilst working as a showroom manager at his previous employer. Over a decade later with the skill and passion for design under his belt, John joined the North East Interiors team as a sales designer and has been expanding his expertise in his role for the last 3 months.

We caught up with John to find out more about his background in design, why he decided to join our team and what a typical day at North East Interiors looks like…

How many years of experience do you have in this type of work - sales or kitchen/bathroom design?

“I have 12 years experience in kitchen and bathroom design and I have worked in electrical retail when I was a manager at O2 so that’s where my sales knowledge comes from, after that I took on the role of a manager for a showroom where I ended up leaning into the design side of things as I took a very keen interest.

“I have no qualifications in the design field although I thoroughly enjoyed the subject in school, even though that was a very long time ago, this is where my understanding and enthusiasm for design came from. It also became apparent that I much preferred to work first hand with customers and really loved getting involved in their vision, then I could add my experience of the technical elements to create a space which not only fit the brief but worked effectively.”

What does a typical day look like for you?

“I normally come in and start my day by checking my emails, ensuring any customers are met with a reply, this follows into my diary, adding appointments, reminding myself of any measures I may have that day, all whilst greeting the lovely customers that come into visit our showroom.

“The majority of my day is filled with working on design packages for customers and establishing quotations for each project and passing these on for feedback.”

What is the core focus within your role? What would you say the goal is?

“North East Interiors are a very customer focused company who strive to offer the best service possible alongside focusing on giving customers the best price possible, it's clear that the business is not about hard selling.

“We offer a full service, from start to finish, from design to installation. For me, it’s all about managing the whole process instead of selling something and washing your hands of it.”

What are you passionate about when it comes to your role?

“I have always been from a customer service background, so I enjoy when you get a little bit of recognition from the customers. It’s a great feeling seeing your customer leave happy after liaising with them from the initial chat right up until the completion of the project.”

What’s your favourite part of your job?

“I get a real sense of achievement from the design element of my role. Even though I may be sat at a computer for 6-8 hours a day creating mock ups, I still enjoy it and I like seeing the process and the vision come to life.”

What advice would you give to someone looking to get a new kitchen or bathroom but don’t know where to start?

“Start by getting the layout first and foremost. Here at North East Interiors, we offer a free measuring service, which is unusual as most companies still charge a consultation fee. There is also no pressure or obligation once we do this - I highly recommend this service as a starting point!”

What would you say differentiates North East Interiors from their competitors? In your opinion, why would customers buy from you?

“We are one of the very few companies that will price for the full fit. This is in comparison to some national companies that will charge consumers for a ‘dryfit’ while adding service and joinery fees as extras. As mentioned we also offer a no obligation design service where you can chat with one of the team either in the showroom or virtually, we will then take sizes or room measurements which allows us to create some 3D visuals and set up a quote for you.
