Our projects: The Bradford family kitchen

Date of project: December 2019

Client: The Bradford family

Location: Newburgh

Highlights:

  • Rearranging the seating area to fit 4 people without creating an obstruction to the flow between rooms.

  • Providing increased storage from the original layout, using a mixture of tall and wall units, with a handy corner pull-out mechanism

  • Maximising work surface space by reducing sink drainer size, extending the units up to the back door, and keeping seating area at same height as the worktop so it can also be utilised as an additional worktop.

  • Creating a design that was light and contemporary to brighten the space, while keeping consistency with more traditional elements in the rest of the home.

The brief:

Jane wanted a kitchen that was lighter and brighter, and made better use of the limited space available. The previous dining area was very small and cramped, which was becoming problematic as her two children were now teenagers and required more space for the family to get the best use out of the kitchen.

Jane also wanted a kitchen design that mixed traditional and modern elements. The family’s old granite house already had lots of classic features paired with more contemporary styles, so it was important for Jane that the kitchen reflected this as well.

The process:

The first step in the process was completely redesigning the layout of the kitchen to create a more efficient use of space, and make room for a bigger dining area.

We then designed the units and worktops in a way that would provide plenty of storage space and keep everything accessible, while also bringing a contemporary feel to the kitchen.

The result:

The end result is a stylish family kitchen that feels light and airy. We selected white units to help make the kitchen look brighter, with unique wooden handles to create the balance between traditional and modern that Jane was looking for.

With the change in layout to the kitchen, the Bradfords now have space for a bigger dining table without it feeling cramped. Overall, the room feels bigger than it was before and makes much better use of space, giving the Bradfords a more accessible kitchen that they can make use of as a family.

“The whole process from getting the original design right to having the kitchen installed was straightforward and actually enjoyable. Having done up our whole house over the years (kitchen was the last room to do), I am familiar with projects taking much longer than expected due to unforeseen circumstances that come with stripping back an old house. During the install it was a relief to hand everything over to NE Interiors and although we did have a few surprises to deal with, all the tradesmen were great and took it all in their stride. The project was supposed to take 2 weeks and at the end of 2 weeks we were able to use our new kitchen. We have been well looked after from start to finish, I would definitely recommend them.” - Jane Bradford
